It might still be hot outside, but the calendar is warning us that fall is here, which means that winter is coming. Now’s the time for some fall chores that will make your home safer and save you some money when the cold weather finally arrives.
Auto Program. Studies show that if you set your thermostat back 5 degrees for 8 hours a day, your fuel bill will go down 5%! A programmable thermostat is the way to do this consistently. You set it to go down when you leave in the morning, and to go back up right before you arrive home. Some families have found that they sleep better in a cooler home, and you can program that in as well.
Yes Filter. When’s the last time you changed the filter on your HVAC? It’s recommended that you change it once a month for better air quality, less wear and tear on your system, and to save money! It requires more energy to push air through a dirty filter. This is an easy fix that you can do yourself.
Down Drafts. Heat rises, and that means that in the winter, the warmest place in a room is up high! A ceiling fan on reverse will push that warmer air back down to where you are, making your room feel much warmer, especially if you have tall ceilings.

Power on Ice. Remember that ice storm when you were without power? If you promised yourself then that you were going to get a generator before the next crisis hit, now’s the time. Don’t wait until everyone else is in line. Be prepared, and get your generator now.
On the Line. Speaking of ice storms, don’t let the sagging power lines in your yard be the cause of your whole neighborhood losing electricity. Look over your property for lines that are obstructed by limbs or have been stretched by new tree growth over the summer. If you see a problem, call the power company now!
