Nowadays almost everyone now travels with a cell phone, tablet, and/or computer. These electronic devices help with navigation, communication, reservations, and even entertainment. When you’re charging your devices internationally, you have to make allowances for differences in outlets, voltage, and availability of electricity. Here’s a list of things that you might – or might not – need to pack.
☑Converters. Believe it or not, your laptop, tablet, or cell phone is probably converting electricity right now. The little ‘box’ on the power cord is a transformer, changing electricity from alternating current (AC) to the direct current (DC) that your device actually uses. The transformer detects and converts whatever current is coming in, meaning it works even if you are in a country that uses 220 volts. Take a look at the images, and you’ll see how that tiny print actually tells you about the conversion. If the small print isn’t there, check with your product documentation to make absolutely sure. Dual voltage devices something like “Input 100 – 240V, 50 – 60 Hz”.
☑Adapters. Don’t forget that you may still need an adapter so that your plug will fit into the outlets of the country you are visiting.
☑Power Banks. If you’re visiting a country where the electrical supply turns on and off regularly, there are power surges when the electricity or generator comes back on. To protect your cell phone or tablet, you can use a power bank for charging. It will serve as a type of surge protector. For a laptop, there is a small level of surge protection included in the power brick. If you’re going to be traveling for a long period of time, you probably should invest in a surge protector that will work in the country you are visiting.
☑Other Electrical Devices. Battery rechargers for cameras most likely have built in converters. Your hairdryer or shaver probably does not. Check the specs for anything that you need to plug in, and decide what will work for you.
