Smoke Detectors By The Numbers
You have a smoke detector in your home so your family will be alerted in case you have a fire. In order to ensure that protection really works, there are a few things that you need to know.
Seven Year Switch. It’s a good rule of thumb to replace your smoke detectors every seven to ten years. If you’re not sure how old yours is, you can look on the back to see the manufacture date. You can also eyeball it. If your detector is yellowing like the one in the picture below, it’s too old!
Two in One. Most people don’t know that there are two main kinds of smoke detection. Ionization alarms are fastest at detecting flames, whether it be burned toast or a flaming trash can. Photoelectric detectors are best at detecting slow burns, like one from a cigarette left on a piece of furniture. We recommend that you install a dual sensor smoke alarm, to protect your home in case of either kind of fire. These detectors can be purchased anywhere, and while they are slightly more expensive than a single detection alarm, the cost is well worth it!
