Suppressing the Surge
Electricity is a powerful beast. Controlled, it makes our lives easier. But every once in a while, your home or office will experience an electrical surge – a greater than normal rush of power. The surge can heat up wires so much that anything connected to them is damaged or destroyed.
Everybody Has a Spike! Electrical surges happen more often than you would think. Causes includes:
•When power is restored after an outage
•Powering on or off of appliances like air conditioners or even hair dryers
•Surges from large manufacturing facilities near your home
•Animals causing transformer to blow
•Problems with telephone and cable lines
•Faulty or inadequate wiring
NOTE: If your lights flicker or dim when an appliance turns on, you’re having a power surge.
Deep Frying. Slow Dying. Anything that has a microprocessor is vulnerable to a power surge. That includes a lot of things in your home – from the refrigerator and microwave to the television and computer. Sometimes, a surge causes damage immediately, and your device is ‘fried’. More often, the damage happens bit by bit, and you don’t even know it is happening until the electrical item stops working.
Suppressing the Surge. A surge suppressor stops the spike in the voltage by blocking it by absorbing the extra energy, or diverting it. Surge protectors can be installed at the point of use and for your entire home.
That Power Strip is NOT a Surge Protector. Many of us have multiple plug power strips that have a reset button. Unless the power strip specifically indicates that it is also a surge protector, it is NOT.
Protect Yourself. Our electricians install both point of use and whole home surge protectors. Our prices are really reasonable, duplex point of use receptacles starting at $113, and whole home surge protectors starting at only $395.
