In recent years, a shift toward sustainability and energy efficiency has resulted in an increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales. In turn, the need for charging stations has increased. Our team at Aspire Electric, Inc. has experience installing Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations at both residential and commercial properties. These charging stations offer varying degrees of convenience and charging power for EV drivers. Continue reading to learn more about each one.
Level 2 charging stations commonly include the following essential features:
- Charging Power. Level 2 charging stations provide a moderate level of charging power, usually ranging from 3.3 kW to 19.2 kW. This permits EVs to charge at a rate of approximately 10 to 60 miles per hour of range, contingent upon the power output.
- Connector Type. Although different locations may have their own connectors, Level 2 stations usually employ a common SAE J1772 connector. A Tesla-specific connector is another feature found in some Level 2 stations.
- Charging Time. Depending on the size of the EV’s battery and the station’s power output, charging times at Level 2 stations differ. An EV requires several hours to fully charge from empty to full on average.
DC fast chargers, another name for Level 3 charging stations, are made for quick charging. Level 3 charging stations typically have the following essential features:
- Charging Power. Level 3 charging stations offer high-power charging, typically between 50 and 350 kW or even more. This makes it possible for EVs to quickly acquire a sizable range.
- Connector Type. Unlike Level 2 connectors, Level 3 stations often employ DC connectors like the CHAdeMO or CCS (Combined Charging System).
- Charging Time: Level 3 stations can supply a significant quantity of power in as little as 15 to 30 minutes.
Both types of charging stations offer benefits for today’s drivers. Your unique needs, such as your driving style and the distance you typically drive, will determine whether you choose Level 2 or Level 3 charging. Contact our team today to learn more.
